Watch and listen as Shawn Achor, author of “The Happiness Advantage,” describes his theory about the effects of reflecting on positives and reinforcing the good things in our lives. In this entertaining lecture, one in a series of TED Talks delivered in Bloomington, Indiana, May 2011, Shawn explains his desire to restructure the ratio of positive to negative messages that our brains encounter. He describes that it is not our reality that shapes us, but the lens through which our brain views our reality that defines our happiness. He posits that if we change our formula for happiness, and can change the lens; and if we change the lens, we will, in fact change our reality and our perception of happiness. His steps for raising the levels of positivity in the present form the basis for our Life In Focus Experiment.
Shawn Achor describes his five steps to a happier life – the theory behind his book, “The Happiness Advantage.” In this brief video, Shawn explains how positive moments of reflection actually create tetris effects in our brains, reinforcing those positives and compounding our positive experience – changing the way our brain perceives our “happiness quotient.” His message of positive psychology describes the power and “ripple effect” of a single act of kindness. And how, over time, we can rewire our brains to look for the positive instead of the negative. He also describes the interconnected effects of exercise and meditation on the human body. He explains that the rewards of both go far beyond the immediate as too often, our body’s and mind’s well-being is neglected in a world where we too often multitask and lack focus in our daily activities.
